Kristin Royer and I are working on a graphic novel! Above are a few images, without any of the accompanying word bubbles. If you want to see the big versions of these images, go to Kristin’s site dedicated to pitching the project.
Kristin wanted me to desaturate the colors for the beginning of the story, and once we move into the more magical part of the tale, she wanted things to get more vibrant. I went for a very sketchy, loose drawing style that I think works well.
Hope you like!
Anything that starts or ends in Barcelona is destined to be magical. I'm excited to see how this turns out!
I love that first pic. Maybe just cuz I love maps, but the way you layered it is awesome.
ps. I CANNOT believe that you left Porto off the map. I'm seriously offended. Seriously. I am. Offended.
Oh my gosh Sam! It looks amazing! Can't wait to see the final project!

What a cute old man!
I would NEVER touch a bug that big. Gross. Even if the dudes glasses are completely endearing.

haha! This one provokes all kinds of questions…what is she running from? or is she running TO something? Is that swimming garb? Is she pregnant? Because if she is, the reason for running must be really good.
Nah, I don't think she's pregnant. She's older. And buxom.

love the samurai's face…especially the eyebrows.
Yeah, those brows rock!

I finished this illustration for Thriving Family magazine a few months ago. Now that the issue is out, I can finally post the image.
The article is about welcoming adopted children into blended families. The art director wanted vibrant colors and wanted to show a family with diverse ethnicities. Hope you like! And check out the magazine; it has some great articles.
Very cool…I like it a lot.
I've never noticed missing tooth girl's socks. Those are awesome! (BTW, it looked great in the magazine!)

Just a little sneak peek of something I’ve been working on . . .
Hi Sam Ricks, Nice blog! How to add the Glitter Effect Mouse Pointer to your Blog
You have to be seriously talented to ride an octopus!
Yeah, they're kinda slippery. You have to be careful!

I know this sorta looks like it’s supposed to be a story, but it’s not. I sketched these in my Moleskine then colored them in Photoshop.
And I used to wreck my bike all the time. I think most of my bodily scars (and maybe my mental ones) come from biffing it while cycling.
I don't think I knew that about you. Hopefully you never biffed it over such a huge ledge!

I love this doodle. She’s such a cool little character. The way you see her here is about 3 times the actual size of the drawing.
That is an awesome crown. You should send the sketch to Kate.
Yeah, I think Kate'd look good in this crown.

Well guys, it’s been a while. But I have been creating. Lots going on right now, including
Please finish this one, it is so funny!
I drew these a few months ago while my students were working. The class’ conversation had somehow turned to killer bees. I love the ones with the bones through their noses.

Sketching on the job, huh? Those poor, deprived students.
I like the little skull necklace on the last one.
I like the one on the very top right of the big fat bee opening his mouth to eat the other little guy. Ha ha!
Thanks for the comment, Tom! Your work is looking awesome.
Hello.
I started to write blog in English.
I will write about everything, will be a lot of pictures, reviews of books, films, songs etc.
So it would be nice if you visit my blog sometimes
(Sorry for mistakes, I'm still learning English)

I made this after I finished grad school. I’m not sure why I never posted it.
I *LOVE* this.
It's the real world…

I made these two years ago for a company that wanted a polygonal tree logo. (Really.) Sadly, the client decided not to use my work. (Actually, I think the mark they decided on is more appropriate; all type.) But this afternoon while looking through my archives, I found the image, put a cool texture (which I made*) on the trees, and now I present them to you!
* (I love parentheses. And asterisks.)
I way prefer this to the word logo, and I like word logos.

Tonight as I stewed over other projects, I noticed some stray paper swatches* at my desk. The swatches looked a bit underdressed, so I embellished them with a few doodles. The squares are each 2″ x 2″. Random, yes, but kinda fun.
* (Just like paint companies provide swatch books or color chips for their paints, paper companies provide swatch books for their papers.)
i like.
I'm just proud of your using every little scrap you can find!

Another quick sketch. I thought it would be fun to show a wrinkly grandma watering wrinkly flowers.
Oh, they are both withered! So cute!
Cute Character. This is me in a few more years.
This is smart! I got a good chuckle from it! You have some great work!
Great character!

I like those sketches. How did you color them? Marker? It's really fun.
on another note. I think you will find this amusing.

It reminds me of our Studies Weekly days.
Love the rain coat girl. I could put her up in my house.
That was hilarious, Manelle! Thanks for the link!
I did the illustrations in pen and then scanned them in and painted them in Photoshop.
I'm glad you thought it was funny. I like the photoshop paint. Makes me want to try it.

Just messin’ around. Giraffes have long tongues.
I like the texture of the background. Very cool.
Now the giraffe also has ears. I knew something looked weird about him when I posted this last night!
I love all the textures, the background, the back, very awesome.

I drew these while watching a movie. For the life of me I can’t remember what movie.
Is the beard man your hero?!
I think the movie was Lion King vs Pirates of the Carribean…umm vs a Star Wars looking guy and…Monsters Inc. Yeah.
Nice stuff. I really like the pen work.
C.J. – Yeah, it was something like that.
Thanks, Manelle!

I think I have a really really cool idea for this. We’ll see what develops . . .
love it! I love the shadowing of the faces. Very cool.
It vaguely reminds me of Shark Boy and Lava Girl. In a good way.

Haha! A little Latin humor.
haha! I like it! And I actually remember that story!
I love the sketchiness of this!
